The Good of Sarajevo, United Kingdom, 2025

The Good of Sarajevo

‘The Good of Sarajevo’ is an original musical written and directed by Luke Pemberton, an up-and-coming 18-year-old playwright and composer from Middlesbrough.

It explores the life of one of history’s most tragic figures: Gavrilo Princip — a sickly schoolboy dreamer whose assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 would change the course of history forever.

An intricately told story of never feeling good enough, the show follows Gavrilo’s slow descent into becoming a heartless killer for the 'Black Hand Gang'. Blending light-hearted humour with themes of revenge, ambition and betrayal, the show explores the true extent to which someone will go just to be remembered.

With a powerful original score — from haunting ballads to bold, never-before-heard showstoppers — and brought to life in collaboration with talented students from Middlesbrough Youth Theatre, this gripping historical musical will make you question everything you thought you knew about the boy who sparked the First World War.

Includes light swearing.
