Jean Muir: Signature Style since 1966

Join Georgina Ripley to explore the collections of the National Museums Scotland, focusing on the Jean Muir archive and her new research exploring British fashion in the 1960s and 1970s.

Influential fashion designer Jean Muir (1928-95) is known for timeless, minimalist designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Before Barbara Hulanicki founded the trend-setting Biba brand, Muir was working her way through the British fashion ranks as a sales assistant at Liberty, a designer at Jaeger and then establishing her own labels in the 1960s. The National Museums Scotland Jean Muir archive consists of around 18,000 objects (including paper patterns, sketches, accessories and garments) and provides a fascinating resource to understand the design, making and promotion of fashion in the late 20th century.
