Best Western Hotel De Havelet

Best Western Hotel de Havelet

Sustainability at Best Western Hotel de Havelet is driven by a clear sense of purpose, combining environmental responsibility with practical, long-term benefits for guests, staff, and the wider community. Achieving SILVER REST accreditation in 2025, the hotel has embedded sustainable thinking into everyday operations, recognising that responsible practices not only protect the environment but also enhance efficiency, guest experience, and commercial resilience.

The hotel’s sustainability journey has been shaped by passionate leadership and a growing awareness of the expectations of modern travellers and corporate bookers, many of whom now prioritise carbon awareness and energy efficiency. Rather than treating sustainability as a standalone initiative, Hotel de Havelet has made it a core value—guiding investment decisions, staff training, refurbishment plans, and guest engagement.
Through a combination of carbon literacy training, energy and water efficiency upgrades, renewable energy use, and innovative guest-led initiatives, Hotel de Havelet demonstrates how thoughtful action can create meaningful environmental impact while remaining aligned with the realities of day-to-day hotel operations.

Carbon Literacy Training

A team of 10 staff members, spanning management, chefs, and housekeeping, completed a carbon literacy course, earning formal qualifications and deepening their understanding of climate action.

Guest-Led Tree Planting Program

Guests are invited to opt out of daily room cleaning, with the hotel donating to a local charity that plants native trees and hedgerows. To date, (2025) £4,500 has been donated—equivalent to 750 trees—and the initiative has received positive local media coverage.

Water & Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Following a brand conference, the hotel partnered with a company to retrofit water and energy-saving devices on all showers and taps at BW Hotel de Havelet.

Renewable Energy & Smart Refurbishments

The hotel features photovoltaic panels. Refurbishments now include electric heating and cooling systems, which not only meet guest expectations for air conditioning but also reduce carbon emissions.

Sustainable Toiletries

A local supplier provides seaweed-based toiletries in refillable containers, significantly reducing single-use plastics.

Guest Engagement

Guests are actively involved in the sustainability journey through:
Information folders in rooms and on the hotel websites
Visible eco-friendly amenities like reusable water bottles and refillable toiletries. Staff trained to explain the purpose and impact of sustainability efforts

Electric Minibus

A new electric minibus will offer town shuttles and complimentary island tours, reducing the need for guest vehicles.

Expanded Energy Efficiency

Continued rollout of electric heating and cooling systems across both properties.

Pool Energy Conservation

Investigating pool covers to reduce heat loss at Hotel de Havelet’s indoor pool.

Local & Seasonal Sourcing

Plans to collaborate with local market gardeners and redesign menus to promote plant-based options and reduce beef consumption.
