The Towers themselves date back to the 8th century, although you’ll be pleased to know that the attractions are much more modern! Alton Towers is packed with a host of great rides and attractions set in an amazing 500 acres that includes gardens and several themed attraction areas. So what is there to do in and around Alton Towers?

Alton Towers is obviously famed for its white knuckle rides and these cool attractions are suitable for people of all ages and sizes, you will even find something suitable for Aunt Rosie who thinks she is too old for rides!

Famed for The Corkscrew, Alton Towers obviously has rides to scare and terrify, but what about for the little ones? Don’t worry, they won’t miss out on any of the fun as there are numerous attractions and fun zones just for them. They could try the Squirrel Nutty Ride (Awwwwww) or have fun on the Sonic Spinball (named after Sonic the famous computer game hedgehog!), they could try the Beastie (Oooohhh), a roller coaster aimed at the under 11’s or they could simply tire themselves out in the Space Adventures playground, there is also Cloud Cuckoo Land, another zone of rides and play areas for younger children.

As well as the typical thrilling theme park rides, Alton Towers also boasts a heated Water Park! This oasis of fun is suitable for all the family and is open all year round. It offers water-slides, waterfalls, a lazy river ride, tipping bucket, bubble pool as well as restaurants to allow you to regain your energy before you dive in again!

Whilst staying near Stoke, it is well worth visiting The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. In its heyday Stoke was the centre of pottery production in Great Britain; world famous names – Wedgewood, Royal Doulton, Spode and Milton were all based around Stoke-on-Trent and is considered to be the home of the pottery industry in England. But it’s more than just about the ceramics; you can see a World War II Spitfire and all sorts of arts and crafts, and then relax in their café.

Trentham Monkey Forest is completely unique to Great Britain. It is the only place where you can walk amongst 140 Barbary macaques roaming freely in over 60 acres of beautiful English Forest. Immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings and you will be transported to the natural habitat of these amazing mammals.

Overview

Location: Staffordshire, near the quaint market town of Alton.
History: Alton Towers – part of the Merlin Entertainments family – first opened to the public in 1860, but the house and Grade I listed gardens date back to 1810. In 1980, the modern day theme park was created, later introducing Britain’s first double loop rollercoaster (the Corkscrew).
Unique features: The theme park is the largest in the UK, covering 550 acres of land. Visitors can explore Grade II listed Towers, the Grade I listed Gardens, and take in the iconic banqueting hall bay window that features 27 stained glass panes.
Visitor highlights: Take on Nemesis Reborn, drop into Oblivion or hang in suspense on Toxicator, the resorts latest addition. There’s more than 40 rides and attractions for you to enjoy, as well as CBeebies Land to keep the little ones entertained.

Activities and experiences

CBeebies Land: Who said theme parks are only for older kids? If you’re visiting with toddlers or babies, there are plenty of shows for them to enjoy at CBeebies Land, including the Teletubbies Big Band Show and Hey Duggee Live. You can check show times on the Resort app on the day of your visit.
Scarefest Alton Towers: Think your brave? Put your nerves of steel to the test at Scarefest. Between September to November, the theme park is full of spine-tingling Halloween attractions and sensational live entertainment. Consider yourself warned.

Visitor information

Opening hours: Alton Towers is open between March-the beginning of November. Opening time is 10am but closing times differ, so always check beforehand. The park is closed during winter.
Admission fees: A day pass costs around £29 if ordered online / £68 if you buy on the day. A Parent & Toddler Pass is £29 online / £68 on the day. Student discount is available for students with Student Beans or UNiDAYS.
Facilities: Restrooms are dotted all over the park – just find your nearest map to guide you in the right direction. And the same for restaurants, cafes and snack stands. From delicious donuts to tasty hot dogs and pizzas, you’ll find something for every taste bud. If you want some memorabilia, pop into one of seven gift shops. For those driving, parking costs £10 for the day. Gold, Platinum and Premium Merlin Passholders are entitled to free car parking.
Accessibility: Alton Towers offers a Ride Access Pass to guests who may find it difficult or cannot stand for long periods of time either due to a physical disability or a learning/emotional impairment. Applications for this pass should be submitted at least 7 days before your visit. There’s also a sensory space in CBeebies Land for those who require a few moments of quiet, as well as accessible toilets and medical storage.
Safety tips: Bags and personal belongings are searched before you enter the resort. Sometimes there may be additional security measures including walkthrough metal detectors, security arches or wand metal detectors. Visit the website for the full list of prohibited items.
